Head of Riga City Council’s Spatial Planning and Mobility Department probed for bribery

The Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) on Monday raided the offices of Riga City Council’s Spatial Planning and Mobility Department as part of a bribery probe, LETA was told at KNAB.

In the pre-trial investigation, KNAB is checking reports that Janis Vaivods, the acting head of the Spatial Planning and Mobility Department, allegedly offered a large bribe to a public official in return for a favorable decision in Vaivods’ interests.

KNAB launched the criminal probe over the case of attempted large-scale bribery on January 8.

Of the two persons featuring in the case one has been subject to security measures not involving detention, KNAB representatives said.

The anti-corruption bureau noted that the pre-trial investigation is not related to the Spatial Planning and Mobility Department’s everyday operations.

As LETA reported, after KNAB’s raid on the Spatial Planning and Mobility Department, Vaivods was suspended from office and replaced with Rudite Revelina, the head of the Traffic Organization and Project Management Department.

In response to Monday’s events, councilors from the opposition Harmony party called for Riga Mayor Vilnis Kirsis (New Unity) and Olafs Pulks (New Unity), the head of the Traffic and Transport Committee, to resign.
