Jelgava hosts a camp for children and young people from Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk

Jelgava Municipality, with the support of local businesses, is organizing a camp for children and young people from the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, LETA was informed by the municipality.

According to Jelgava Municipality, in May, a letter was received from the mayor of the sister city of Ivano-Frankivsk asking to host orphans of those who have fallen in the war, children of families of Ukrainian soldiers and primary school-age children this summer. The children suffer from depression and live in constant anxiety, so the camp would be an opportunity to forget their experiences for a while and to experience positive emotions.

This week, the first group of 29 children and young people and five accompanying teachers are attending the camp at Jelgava Primary School Valdeka – Development Center, and the second group of campers will arrive in two weeks’ time. In total, up to 60 children and young people aged 10-17 and 10 accompanying teachers will be welcomed in Jelgava this month.

During the camp, primary school teachers will organize various activities – excursions, workshops and sports activities – in cooperation with specialists from other municipal institutions. The guests will be introduced to the city by visiting different places and will go on a tour of Latvia.

The companies Evopipes, Gren Jelgava, VAKS Kooperativa Sabiedriba, AKG Thermotechnik Lettland, Zn Metals, Igate Road Construction Company, RIMI Latvia and Lidl Latvija responded to the invitation of the municipality to participate in the organizing of the camp.
