Latvian police chief: Slight increase in crime

Latvian State Police Chief Armands Ruks said in an interview on Latvian Television this morning that Latvia has experienced a slight increase in the crime rate.

Ruks estimated that the number of recorded crimes this year could have increased by “two or three percent.”

There has been an increase in the number of thefts from shops, the commander said.  Police are also reporting increasing numbers of violent crimes, because people are less likely to hide such abuses and more willing to report them to law enforcement officers.  Various campaigns have been launched to support such co-operation.

Asked about crime trends, Ruks declared that “nothing extraordinary has happened.” He added, however, that there is no option for the police to rest, because there are new challenges on the agenda, including ones that relate to national security.
