Lauri Hussar announces decision to resign from Estonia 200 chairman position

Estonia 200 chairman Lauri Hussar announced at a party board meeting on Monday his wish to step down from the position of chairman of Estonia 200 and devote himself to the position of Riigikogu speaker.

According to Hussar, in the current difficult political situation, the role of Riigikogu speaker requires taking into account the rights of all MPs and a cross-party decision-making process in order to get the Riigikogu out of its deadlock, spokespeople for the party said.

“The Estonian parliament is facing the biggest wave of obstruction ever and I have come to the realization that I want to dedicate myself to setting the Riigikogu straight so that the parliament can fulfill all its obligations arising from the Constitution and bring constructive debate back to the session hall,” Hussar said.

According to him, the panel of experts he convened in October as Riigikogu speaker, which discussed possible solutions to end the deadlock in the parliament, also helped to reach this decision. Several experts emphasized the importance of keeping the role of Riigikogu speaker and the party’s leading politicians separate.

Hussar said that several important political decisions have been implemented in the past year, during which he has been the chairman of Estonia 200.

“We ended the dispute that divided society for a long time and established marriage equality, the concept of a personal state has gained a completely new momentum and, on its basis, the process of building a zero budget, and the reform of a uniform Estonian school has also been vigorously launched. These are long-term decisions that create the background for Estonia to be successful and viable decades from now,” he said.

Hussar was elected chairman of Estonia 200 on Oct. 15 of last year. Under his leadership, a Riigikogu election campaign was carried out and Estonia 200 won 14 seats in the parliament.

According to the board’s decision, a general assembly of Estonia 200 to elect a new chairman will take place on Nov. 19, the deadline for submitting candidates is Nov. 12.
