Lithuanian Defense Minister Anusauskas steps down

Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas is stepping down, the government confirmed on Friday.

Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte has already received his  resignation letter, the government’s press service added.

“The Press Service of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania confirms that today, March 15, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte received Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas’ resignation letter. Comments on the prime minister’s decision will be made on Monday, March 18,” the statement said.

Anusauskas is set to meet with President Gitanas Nauseda on Saturday. The presidential office says the minister requested the meeting.

Ridas Jasiulionis, spokesman for the president, told BNS that Anusauskas requested a meeting with the president on Friday night, but he refrained to comment on the reason.

“We can confirm that the president will meet with the minister in thee morning,” he said.

Approached by BNS earlier in the day, Anusauskas refused to comment and vowed to do so on Saturday. BNS was later unable to contact him.
