Narva border crossing point open only to pedestrians

The Narva border crossing point in northeastern Estonia was closed to vehicle traffic from Thursday, Feb. 01, but it is still possible to cross the Estonian-Russian control line on foot.

Estonia closed the border crossing to vehicles due to Russia’s decision to start reconstruction works at the Ivangorod border crossing point. The Narva-Ivangorod border crossing is expected to remain closed to vehicles until the end of 2025.

Bus traffic between Estonia and Russia via Narva will not be interrupted, but passengers will have to cross the border on foot and get on another bus on the other side of the border.

The border guard authority predicts that the number of border crossings in Narva will decrease by up to 20 percent.

Ursula Riimaa, deputy director general of the Tax and Customs Board for customs, said that the focus of the Tax and Customs Board continues to be on the control of sanctioned goods, and the closure of the Narva border crossing point to vehicles will not bring any changes to this.

“Most of the violations at the border in Narva are committed by pedestrians or people traveling by bus, so customs will continue to keep up a strong control presence in Narva,” the official said.

The Police and Border Guard Board does not recommend visiting Russia.
