Nauseda, Vegele, Simonyte would get most votes in presidential election in Lithuania

Incumbent Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda would receive the biggest number of votes in the presidential election that will take place in May, according to a new Vilmorus poll for the Lietuvos Rytas daily, published on Friday.

40.2 percent would have voted for Nausėda in March, while lawyer Ignas Vegele would have received 10.6 percent and 8.9 percent would have backed Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, the poll shows.

MP Remigijus Zemaitaitis, leader of the Nemuno Ausra (The Dawn of the Nemunas) party, would have received 5.1 percent, and 4 percent would have voted for MP Aurelijus Veryga from the opposition Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, who has recently withdrawn from the race.

“His votes clearly go to Gitanas Nauseda,” Valdas Gaidys, head of Vilmorus, told BNS.

Labor Party leader Andrius Mazuronis would have gotten 2.2 percent, and medical doctor Eduardas Vaitkus and the Freedom Party’s candidate, ex-Constitutional Court judge Dainius Zalimas, would have gotten 2 percent each.

1.8 percent would have voted for ex-Chief of Defense Valdas Tutkus, who is no longer standing for election, and 1.3 percent would have voted for Giedrimas Jeglinskas, a former defense vice minister and NATO deputy secretary general, nominated by the Democrats “For Lithuania”.

6.5 percent would have not voted at all in March, and 15.2 percent were undecided.

The Vilmorus survey was conducted on March 15-23.

The presidential election in Lithuania will take place on May 12.
