Russia can no longer stop Estonia’s Narva power plants

In November last year, a stationary solution was completed that will permanently provide cooling water for the oil shale fueled power plants in Narva, northeastern Estonia, which means that Russia can no longer force the stations to shut down by opening the locks of the dam of the Narva reservoir, public broadcaster ERR reported.

“There are emergency solutions in place that will be activated in the event of a drop in water levels. We cannot disclose any details, but these solutions are now ready and operational,” Mattias Kaiv, spokesman for state-owned energy group Eesti Energia, told ERR.

Before the completion of the emergency solution, a temporary arrangement was in place.
