Seven out of 10 people in Lithuania see Russia as threat to national security

Seven out of ten people in Lithuania believe that Russia poses a threat to national security, and almost a quarter disagree with this view, according to an opinion poll commissioned by the public broadcaster LRT.

Twenty-nine percent of respondents answered “definitely yes” to the question whether Russia poses a real threat to Lithuania’s national security, and 41 percent said “rather yes”.

On the other hand, 23 percent disagreed, with 4 percent saying “definitely not” and 19 percent “rather not.”

Another 7 percent either had no opinion or did not answer the question.

Permanent residents of non-Lithuanian ethnic origin were more moderate in their assessment of the threat. While 31 percent of them perceive Russia as a threat, 50 percent do not share this view. This compares to 74 percent and 20 percent, respectively, among Lithuanians.

In the representative survey commissioned by LRT, Baltijos Tyrimai polled 1,115 adult residents of Lithuania between March 15 and 25. The results of the poll have an error margin of up to 2.9 percent.
