The Skanste revitalization project will cost EUR 9.3 million more, lawmakers of the Riga City Council finance and administration committee were informed today.
Thus, from the initially planned EUR 10 million, the cost of the project will rise to almost EUR 21.5 million.
The Riga City Council will most likely have to decide on the allocation of funds for this project in order not to lose the money it has invested so far, including European Union funds. Moreover, in order not to lose the progress made so far, the city council should decide to complete the project within the next year.
Today, the finance and administration committee approved the additional funding for the project and decided to refer the matter to the Riga City Council.
As reported, the contract with the Central Financial Contracting Agency (CFLA) for the first phase of the revitalization of Skanste was signed on January 16, 2020. On March 18, 2020, a contract for the execution of the project’s construction works was concluded between the city development department and the association of persons RR-Eko, consisting of Riga Rent, Eko Osta and Baltijas Buve.
Last year, problems were identified during the implementation of the project. These were related to inadequate soil.
The aim of the project is to revitalize a previously degraded area and create an accessible and multifunctional public open space, integrating the rainwater collection system in the form of ponds and canals, which is vital for the Skanste neighborhood and Riga. Around it, a modern multifunctional green area is being created, accessible to the public.
The works of phase one of the Skanste revitalization project were originally planned to be completed by the end of 2022.
