Complex of outdoor swimming pools to be built next to Linnahall in Tallinn

The architectural competition for the best layout for the buildings and a seaside promenade of the Kalasadam (Fishers’ Harbor) properties in Tallinn was won by the architectural office Arhitekt Must with an entry named “Fishermans Wharf,” which calls for a complex of outdoor swimming pools, a restaurant, a marina and a market to built next to the currently disused Linnahall sports and entertainment arena.

Hanno Grossschmidt, the chairman of the jury of the architectural competition, said the jury considered the question of how the architectural idea will support and create the sensory experience of the visitor to the complex to be important.

“The winning entry has reached a well-succeeded image through the sense and interpretation of the location, which is an eloquent and distinctive landmark and at the same time home-like, warm, simple and inviting to the user,” Grossschmidt said.

Alvin Jarving, architect with Arhitekt Must, says they based their concept on the history of the fishers’ harbor and sought to emphasize and leverage its special atmosphere.

The outdoor swimming and bathing complex, to be open round the year, will be operated by the Finnish company Nordic Urban, which manages a similar center, Allas Sea Pool, in Helsinki. It will feature heated outdoor pools, various saunas, a restaurant, flexible event spaces, and outdoor terraces.

“Our strategy is to develop an international network of Allas Pools. The Tallinn project is an important step in this direction,” said Nordic Urban’s development director and member of the architecture competition jury, Petteri Lautso.

The Kalasadam area of Tallinn is being transformed into a people-centered urban space, with the still-to-be-completed tram line improving its accessibility by public transport. As part of the new vision for the sea area around the Linnahall, managed by the City of Tallinn, Kalasadama Street will be relocated in order to create more space for pedestrians and landscaping along the seafront and move motorized traffic away from the sea.

The aim of the public architectural competition organized by property developer Kapitel was to find the best architectural solution for the buildings to be located at the addresses 5, 5a, 7, 7a and 7b Kalasadama Street and the seaside promenade. The total area of the development is 7,500 square meters, including about 5,000 square meters under buildings.

A total of 13 works took part in the architectural competition. Other awardees included an entry by the name of “Kalala” by AB Moluba, “Kalavork” by Sirkel & Mall, and “Vaade” by AB Dagopen.
